Abstract
Pain in gastritis patients that is not properly managed may interfere with comfort, rest patterns, daily activities, and reduce the patient’s quality of life. One of the non-pharmacological therapies that can be used to help reduce pain intensity is Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR). PMR is a relaxation technique performed by tensing and relaxing muscle groups gradually, allowing the body to become more relaxed, reducing muscle tension, and decreasing pain perception. This case study aimed to determine the application of Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) technique in reducing pain intensity in gastritis patients. The methodology used was a case study with a nursing care approach that included assessment, nursing diagnosis, intervention, implementation, and nursing evaluation. The author applied Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) for 15–20 minutes, three times a day for 3 × 24 hours. Pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and PQRST pain assessment. The results of the study showed a decrease in pain scale from NRS 5, categorized as moderate pain, to NRS 3, categorized as mild pain, after the application of Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) for 3 × 24 hours. In addition, the patient stated that pain decreased, the body felt more relaxed and comfortable, nausea decreased, and the patient was able to rest better after the intervention. The conclusion of this case study showed that Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) technique can help reduce pain intensity in gastritis patients. The results of this case study are expected to be used as a reference in the development of nursing services based on non-pharmacological therapy, especially for patients with pain complaints. Keywords: Gastritis, acute pain, Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR), Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), non-pharmacological therapy.
