Abstract

ABSTRACK Nama : Deny Wahyu Prayogo Program Studi : Bachelor of Nursing Judul : The Fffect of Combining a Cotton Blanket and a Blood/Fluid Warmer on Core Body Temperature among Intraoperative Patients at the Operating Room Installation of RSPAD Gatot Soebroto Surgical procedures and anesthesia administration carry a high risk of triggering inadvertent perioperative hypothermia due to cold operating room exposure, central thermoregulation impairment at the hypothalamus, and the infusion of cold intravenous fluids. Passive thermal insulation using a single cotton blanket has proven insufficient to halt the cascade of core body temperature reduction. This study aimed to analyze the effect of combining a blood/fluid warmer and a cotton blanket on core body temperature among intraoperative patients at the Operating Room Installation of RSPAD Gatot Soebroto. A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group was employed, involving 36 intraoperative patients. Subjects were divided equally into an intervention group (n = 18) receiving dual protection with a cotton blanket and a blood/fluid warmer, and a control group (n = 18) receiving a standard cotton blanket only. Core body temperature was measured periodically and analyzed using Paired Samples T-Test and Independent Samples T-Test. Bivariate analysis revealed a highly significant difference in mean intraoperative core temperature between both groups (p = 0,001). The intervention group successfully maintained mean temperature within the safe normothermic range (36,0 °C – 37,5 °C), whereas the control group experienced a sharp temperature decline into clinical hypothermia (<36,0 °C). In conclusion, the combined use of a blood/fluid warmer and a cotton blanket is significantly effective in maintaining core body temperature stability in intraoperative patients. These findings are recommended as an evidence-based foundation for formulating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) regarding perioperative thermoregulation management in hospitals.
